Significant Quotes

1. “Nobody is all together on my side, if you understand me: nobody cares for the woods as I care for them” (Tolkien, 461). This quote is said by Treebeard, who is a protector of the forest. He is describing the harsh reality that no one except for this select group called Ents, who are the protectors, care about saving the forest. It stresses the point that more people need to join the cause in order to preserve nature for the future generations
2. “ The Enemy [that] today seems likely to wither all the woods” (Tolkien, 465). This quote serves not only on the literal level of saying that the people they are fighting against are destroying the forest, but it is saying that what they are symbolically fighting against is consumerism and even deforestation are the enemy.
3. "He has a mind of metal and wheels; and he does not care for growing things..."(Tolkien, 462). In this quote they are referring to Saruman, who was a good wizard turned bad. Here they are talking about his narrow-mindedness which serves to only further his own interests at the expense of the environment. The Ents, as protectors of the forests, do not tolerate that.
4. "The Orcs reeled and screamed and cast aside both sword and spear. Like a black smoke driven by a mounting wind they fled. Wailing they passed under the waiting shadow of the trees and from that shadow none ever came again” (Tolkien, 529). This shows that nature inevitably gets its revenge on those who wreak havoc on it. Nature may be slow to respond, but once it does it is all powerful. Just think about erosion, shifting of tectonic plates, and climate change

5. "Here and there gloomy pools remained, covered with scum and wreckage; but most of the wide circle was bare again, a wilderness slime and tumbled rock, pitted with blackened holes, and dotted with posts and pillars leaning drunkenly this way and that" (Tolkien, 562). This quote shows the after effects of nature's revenge when it destroyed the source of the power that damaged it. Essentially the Ents used the power of erosion sped up immensely to crack the defenses of Saruman's defenses. Their revealed the ultimate irony of Saruman being defeated by the very force he so easily dismissed.
